I’m venting about what I have been seeing on twitter tonight.
So, the Leafs just lost to the Bruins in the seventh game, in over time, after having a 3 point head score in the 3rd period. I am not a girl to watch sports games on TV for the hell of it, that being said, I am one for sports. I will watch games on TV, and just because I haven’t been tweeting about it all season long doesn’t make me any less of a fan.
My father is both a Bruins and a Leafs fan. On the first game that the Bruins and Leafs played together, I asked him which one he was rooting for more. He told me he was rooting for the Leafs just because he would like to see them make it after not being in the playoffs in over 9 years. My father’s favourite hockey player of all time is Gerry Cheevers who played for the Boston Bruins, his hockey career lasted from 1956 till 1980. I know these things because hockey allowed me dad to teach me random facts, (also, isn’t it hot when the girl knows a bit about sports, I mean thats why boys what right? The girl that is also one of the guys…) The funniest thing is, Gerry Cheevers is related to my sister-in-law. My dad’s son married into Gerry Cheevers’ family. My father was able to meet his favourite player of all time, the player that he loved the most even when he could recited all the players and their numbers from the Leafs team when he was seven. My father loved Gerry Cheevers, and the Leafs. It is possible to love both, but when I asked who he was rooting for, he picked the Leafs.
He picked the Leafs, so I picked the Leafs. I decided to join the #LeafsNation because my father decided he was rooting for the Leafs. Ask me who my favourite NHL teams are and I will tell you the Bruins and the Leafs. Why? Because I am not a Hockey fan, I am a dad fan. I love my dad, and I love the time I get to spend with him when we watch the games. I love the little bit of excitement in his eyes when I ask him about what icing is or what other rules/penalties are in the game. I love that he loves sharing this time with me.
I’m sorry I didn’t tweet along side all of you “hardcore committed hockey fans” and I am sorry that tonight, for once, I was “some random chick tweeting about the playoffs.” But I will never be sorry for the fun I had with my father tonight, because regardless if they made it to the playoffs or not, those players got paid and got to play a game they loved. I got the joy, and the rush of being a dad fan, and that’s all that really matters to me.
Sincerely,
The Random Chick Tweeting About The Leafs During The Playoffs
